FAQ

Question 1

What does City as a School offer teachers?

We offer a platform for teachers to organize, promote, and deliver online classes. This includes:

Beautiful online listing for your classes
Access to our community of learners
Secure online payments
Integrated messaging
Responsive support via chat, email, and phone

We make it simple for you to begin marketing, signing contracts, getting background checked, giving persnalised feedback, and the back and fourth communications with new families to simplify the logistics, so you can focus on crafting transformative experiences.

Question 2

What topics should I offer?

We encourage you to teach classes on topics you are passionate about and experienced with.

Ideally you work at a company that can offer young people guidance on a project that they can use in their portfolio. If you have a project that young people could build potential solutions for that might be taken on further at your organisation, make that clear in your class description and encourage learners to record the project in their City as a School 'learning record'.

This isn't mandatory! We welcome classes on all subjects and in all formats, for learners up to age 19. We generally suggest offering a range of classes including short-form introductory classes that meet 1-4 times, Interest clubs, as well as longer form semester-long classes.

Our ideal teachers are showing young people how to use the tools of the industry and model great teamwork. For example if you're teaching classes on how to use Unity Game Engine to help teen get into the Games industry or Film CGI / Animation industry. Scope your lesson plan and projects to reflect work that they'll ACTUALLY do in the Games industry or Film CGI / Animation industry.

Our curiosity-cloud is produced once a month from the search results in our learner's search terms. You can use this information to deliver classes which meet their interests.

Question 3

Who can teach?

City as a School does not require formal teaching credentials. We believe that many adults can offer rewarding classes based on their experience and interests. We will soon require criminal background checks before your first class starts. Teachers must be residents of the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand or the United Kingdom.

Question 4

What does it cost? And how do I get paid?

It's free to list classes on City as a School. We take a 20% fee on the parent's side on all transactions, so we only get paid when we succeed in bringing you customers. You have full control over the listed price for a class and number of participants. You receive payment automatically each month.

E.g If you want to sell a session for $10 we add %20 (10+2=$12) - This is what the parent sees.
You still make $10. We take $2. This is a legal constraint of marketplaces operating in the UK. UK employment law protects you the educator from being extorted by platforms.

Question 5

Why should I teach on City as a School instead of Outschool, Juni Learning or Coursera

There's lots of reasons, in short we focus much more on careers and placing teens in our network.

We take less money from you than Outschool and we give you co-ownership.

Juni is focused on 1-1 tutoring and STEM tutors from Ivy league. Our teachers are bridges into an industry with real world experience.

Coursera is focused on self-paced, pre-recorded classes to get a certificate. To teach on Coursera you have to be a professor and your university must partner with Coursera. We accept teachers from a broad background who demonstrate that they have real-world, applied experience in their topics.

Question 6

What industries accept portfolios. What classes are best to teach on City as a School?

Here is a list of digital industries that often prioritise portfolios when considering candidates for job opportunities. Your classes should aim to build a portfolio of projects that improve the learner's career goals. If your classes aren't in these industries but still help young people build applied and future ready skills we still welcome them on City as a School e.g. trades based, applied social sciences or public speaking.
